An injury and sickness depleted Maidenhead U14s started very brightly against visitors Reading in the Berkshire league at Braywick on Sunday. The forwards had the bit between their teeth and piled into Reading, knocking them back in rucks and mauls and pressurising their scrum. But, too often the Maids forwards needlessly kicked the ball into the Reading pack - in one instance losing and re-securing possession 3 times before finally delivering it to the backs. A beautifully executed move in the backs should have resulted in a try if the final pass had been made to the support runners. Nonetheless, this early domination was soon to translate into points. A well worked blind side charge from No 8 Ferrar resulting in a try for scrum half Wright running in support. Unfortunately, this was is good as it got. After this first score the side relaxed to the point of going AWOL. The Reading forwards started to get into the game allowing their strong running centres and full back to run at the Maids' back line. The centres deemed tackling unnecessary leaving these duties to Maids man of the match Saundh. No matter how secure his tackling he couldn't do it all by himself. Reading got onto the score board through a very soft try from a quick penalty with the Maids team ambling back to defend. By the time Maids realised what was happening the Reading centre had scored. The next Reading try was a tad unfortunate. The left winger was down injured, which was spotted by the Reading scrum half who put away one of the forwards to run between the posts. 5-12 at half time and everything to play for. Unfortunately Reading raised their game while Maids retreated into a shell. Reading scored three tries in the second half all through the centres. Luckily their kicker had an off day making the final score 29-5, leaving Maids to lick their wounds and ponder on what might have been if we had bothered to make our tackles. Squad: |
