Windsor put knot around loose U14s

Windsor U14s 34 v Maidenhead U14s 0

Sunday 3rd December 2000

Beneath the backdrop of historic Windsor Castle, a pitched battle was took place which saw the well drilled foot soldiers of Windsor Under 14s breach the defences of local rivals Maidenhead too many times, six times too many in fact. The battle the Berkshire league may now have been won for this year in this local derby, but it is not over yet and there is still hope. Windsor’s slick and quick passing delivered four tries in the first half all from the backs with some good text book rugby. Maidenhead chased hard but just could not make successful tackles

It only took three minutes to demonstrate who was in charge of the game, when Windsor just ploughed straight through to score. And then in another three minutes a kick forward over the line and a quick dive by Windsor brought the score up to 12-0 after 6 minutes.

Maidenhead eventually made it close to the tryline but a penalty got the ball away, then again Maids got within sniffing distance but were thwarted by quick recycling by Windsor who got the ball out of danger, usually away into touch.

When Maidenhead did get the ball they did not gain ground as Windsor were already on top of them and some blind passes meant that the ball did not reach the intended target. Windsor gave some clever long passes to the end of the line so that the wing had a clear run and it paid off. By half time, it was 24-0, and looking bleak

The second half saw better performance but still two more tries were scored this time buy the Windsor forwards. Determination from Maidenhead brought them so near to scoring but were consistently denied a consoling try.

Luckily full back Simon Standfast brought a few Windsor hopefuls down and there was some determined driving on by Maidenhead forwards Adrian Griffiths, Kaz, James Emanuel and Neils Pedersen. Nifty running from flankers Alex Barnett and Thurlough O’Connor, good support from Nicky Fox and Matt Blake and kicks to touch from fly half Matthew Wardle helped reduce the misery. There are no excuses, couldn’t blame the Windsor referee, Jeff Watkins did an excellent job. Windsor were a good team, they had a hunger for the ball and took possession and retained it. Maidenhead made a great effort but unfortunately it was not enough.
