U14s win one, lose one

Maidenhead U14s 10 v Leamington Spa U14s 5
Maidenhead U14s 7 v Ruislip U14s 19

Sunday 1st April 2001

Maidenhead Under14s were relieved of a training session on Sunday and enjoyed a good eighty minutes of rugby in three way friendly with Leamington Spa and Ruislip at the Braywick ground.

First off was Ruislip who quickly demonstrated some excellent passing skills but Maids determination gave them the first try within a few minutes, touched down by Wardle. Although Maidenhead were up in the Ruislip half most of the time, the opposition got through with a great run to level the score in what was a very fast game. Some fast passing out wing Kristian Kent would have lead to a different result if Ruislip had been slow on the tackles. Now level pegging, fortunes changed in the second half, Ruislip had warmed up and some scrappy play gave Ruislip the opportunity to intercept a Maids pass and the score ended at 7-19 to Ruislip.

Leamington were on a mini tour, despite having played at Twickenham RFC on Saturday and spent a night in youth hostel, they were on fine form, ready for battle. A slower game than Ruislip, Maidenhead showed some good moves, a great switch into the hands of Simon Standfast was sadly tackled but some short passes near the Leamington line from Morgan to Griffiths to Thurlogh O'Connor gave a touch down by Standfast to put Maids in the lead. The second half was tougher, a couple of times it looked if Griffiths had got away, but some careless moves gave the ball to Leamington who equalled the score. But before the final whistle, a powerful push by prop Jasnikowski brought Maidenhead a win.
