U13s comfortable winners at Abbey

Abbey U13s 22 v Maidenhead U13s 43

Sunday 26th March 2000

A stunning first half performance produced a well deserved victory for Maids under 13’s in their Berkshire League clash away at Abbey on Sunday. This victory keeps the Braywick side right on the heels of league leaders Newbury.

Maids opening try was straight out of the training manual. Carl Corcoran rose high to win the lineout midway in the Abbey half, scrum half Alex Barnett quickly fed his backs. Fly half Daniel Fair, inside centre Robert Morgan and outside centre Matthew Wardle all showed excellent handling skills, and when full back Simon Standfast popped up in the three quarters, his burst of speed was too much for the floundering Abbey defenders. Wardle successfully converted and Maids were on their way with a 7-0 lead.

A number of missed tackles let in the home side for a soft try, but the Braywick side were soon piling on the pressure again. Now is was the forwards turn to make their impression on the match. First, No.8, Ben Sedler showed excellent concentration with an opportunists try after good work from hooker Grant Shearer and prop forward James Emmanuel, then lock forward Carl Corcoran showed great strength as he muscled his way over from close range. Fair neatly converted both scores. Maids were in unrelenting mood as they continued to push forward, forcing the Abbey backs into errors. The ever busy Barnett was first to react to his team’s penalty award for going over the top twenty metres out. His tap and go and quick pop pass caught the home side napping as he found lock forward Adrian Griffiths who was simply too strong to be stopped.

At 26-5, Abbey closed the gap with a controversial try from a five-metre scrum, but classy Corcoran effectively wrapped up the match with another cleverly worked tap and go penalty. Wardle converted to post a half time lead 33-10.

The second half was a more even affair, however, it was apparent that the Braywick side had lost some of their energy following the non stop battering they had given their opponents in the first half. In the forwards, Kaz Jasnikowski, Tom Robinson and Jamie Plumer all showed tremendous effort to keep up the tackle count, while both wingers David Geneen and Greg Burgess missed tries after last gasp tackles. The half backs Barnett and Fair controlled procedings with cleverly placed kicks. Maids sixth try came from a kick through by Barnett, Wardle showing superb football skills to hack the ball forward and dive on to it as it crossed the Abbey line and straight from the resulting kick off, Corcoran took the high catch. His strong run broke several tackles and his well timed pass found Griffiths on his shoulder. There was still plenty of work to be done, but Griffiths was in confident mood selling an outrageous dummy to the Abbey full back as he powered his way to the final score of the encounter, Maids running out comfortable winners 43-22.
