U13s out-ruck Old Ruts

Maidenhead U13s 25 v Old Rutlishians U13s 12

The under 13s set their season off to a winning start with a determined display against a highly regarded Old Rutlishians side in a friendly fixture on Sunday 25 September. Old Ruts have won the Brean Sands tournament for this age group for the last couple of years.

Playing a 15-a-side format for the first time, Maids signalled their intentions early on with some robust mauling that pegged the West London hosts in their own half. Quick hands by the backs created space for Tom Simpson to storm over for the opening try. An incisive move deep to the five metre line by Matt Roberts set up TJ Hudson, making an excellent support run, to double the score.

Simpson’s pace again beat Old Ruts to score the third and fourth tries in at the corners. Maids captain Ben Pritchard kept the team fully focused and the pressure clearly unsettled the opposition. Matt Bill harried the host’s hesitant pack into unforced errors five metres out and he took full advantage to bravely dive over.

Despite the scoreline, Old Ruts always looked dangerous and in the last of three periods of play exerted prolonged pressure and deservedly pulled back two tries and a conversion for a final score of 25.12.

The match format allowed all players to take part. After the final whistle, the coaches commended the boys for their team spirit and work rate.
