Maidenhead lineout v Abbey
Maidenhead lineout against Abbey
Maidenhead U13s used their final Berkshire League match of the season to rotate their players to find the best combination, at one stage having all their leading forwards off the field. They beat an Abbey team which put up a tremendous defensive effort by 43-0, scoring seven tries in what was a decent, but far from spectacular performance. Drew Allen and Chris Lennox, who both had game time on the wing, underlined Maids' strength in depth by playing outstandingly well but other aspects were lacking.

Maids were building up for their next challenge, the Beaconsfield U13 tournament this Sunday.  Beaconsfield, paying tribute to Marcus Kubler, their late coach, have invited a powerful line-up in which Maids, statistically the best side in the County this season, face Amersham & Chiltern, their counterparts in Bucks; plus the redoubtable Marlow, and London Irish and Richmond.

Abbey put up a stiff resistance on a cold and windy day and Maidenhead, occasionally flustered, missed many scoring chances. Mitchell Batten, whose competitiveness was boundless as usual, scored two tries and worked tremendously hard in defence. Ryan Christian scored two tries from the centre, although the support play around him was not as good as it could have been. Tom Lewis, again contributing superbly as an all-round footballer, scored a try and Luke Knowles, thirsting for action after coming on at half time, raced across from long range for another try. Tom Kay scored as well, picking up the ball and driving over from short range. Alastair Bruce, whose goalkicking is improving by leaps and bounds, converted four of the tries. He was on target and only just short in trying to convert a try from the touchline.

The Maidenhead squad was: Drew Allen, Chris Lennox,Tom Lewis, Ryan Christian, Alasdair Bruce, Ollie Styles, Patrick McSweeney, Tom Morgan, Jack Robinson, Tom Plumer, Luke Knowles, Tom Kay, Andrew Jones, Tom Hocking, Anthony Lewis, Ashley Hanks, Joe Thomas, Mark Williams, Mitchell Batten, Chris Richardson,
