| MAIDENHEAD under 13s started their
new season in torrential conditions at Basingstoke on
Sunday morning. Maids made light work of the wet and slippery conditions early on as they handled the ball confidently through the backs. Early pressure forced the home side onto the back foot and from a scrum some 15 metres from the line hooker Ed Wilding took possession against the head. The ball was held in until number eight Adrian Griffiths picked up from the base of the scrum to burst through the Basingstoke defence for the opening try. Maids were soon on the attack again with the pack dominant. The front row of James Emmanuel, Kaz Jasnikowski and Wilding worked hard to retain possession while Grant Shearer, Ross Carne and Jamie Plumer all made telling tackles at crucial times. Flanker Greg Burgess then rescued a loose ball allowing fly half Matthew Wardle to move-the ball wide. Good hands from centre Simon Standfast and Michael Rubber gave winger Robert Morgan the chance to score in the corner, but his effort was smothered by a last ditch tackle by the Basingstoke full back. Maids got their just reward from the resulting scrum with Alex Barnett darting down the blind side to make the score 10-0 to the visitors. Maids piled on the pressure and after the pack again won a set piece scrum Peter Neill released Harrison Shire to bulldoze his way through to make the score 15-0. The second half started in similar fashion with Daniel Fair's well placed cross kick forcing a knock on. A solid scrum gave Griffiths the chance to score his second try with a pick up and run. Patrick Scanlon and Neils Pederson made good runs without reward before the home side rallied strongly to score a consolation try, which was duly converted to make the final score 20-7 to Maids. |
