Maidenhead RFC’s Under 13s were unlucky to lose a closely fought match against Newbury, conceding an early and late try in a 12.0 defeat. The boys made a slow start and had allowed Newbury to bundle the ball over for the opening try within the first few minutes, but the conversion was missed. The team then woke up and gradually began to dominate but found it hard to get into any kind of rhythm, with several promising moves breaking down. A quick interchange between Thomas Simpson and Morgan Davies exposed Newbury and showed what the team could do. Good running from Michael Habgood and Oliver Evans gained ground but attacks faltered. Forwards Alex Jones and Elliot Reid were strong in the mauls as the boys defended resolutely. Maids had the better of much of the second period and claimed all the best moves. But they weren’t securing ball on the ground, Newbury were fast up on them and they lost possession too easily. The hosts also put in some very good kicking. However, Newbury gave away a succession of penalties that kept them on the back foot, allowing Maids to gain ground. Pacey Jasper van der Walk and Paul Sayers drove Maids towards the try line as captain Ben Pritchard carved out several breaks. Nerves began to fray on the touchline and it seemed to be only a question of when Maids would draw level, and possibly even clinch the match. But as the clock ticked down Newbury made a rare break with a clever piece of kicking to double their lead, and with the conversion run out 12.0 winners. Despite the losing scoreline Maids played very well for long periods against a very strong side – and worked hard as a team. Squad |
