U13s convincing win v Redingensians

Redingensians U13s 0 v Maidenhead U13s 47

Sunday 14th November 1999

The second league game of the season started frustratingly with poor ball handling and indecision with Maids taking their time to settle down. However, after the first 5 minutes of scrappy play, the team started to use their wide game to good effect sending winger, David Geneen, past his would-be tackler and over the line for the first of what was to become nine tries for Maids. Within minutes, the forwards were showing good work in the loose, and setting up the next key move. This was to provide Matthew Wardle with a good linking pass to Adrian Griffiths who scored in the corner. The scrum led by James Emmanuel set up a good maul which drove over but was held up. However, the 5 metre set piece gave the chance for a long pass which missed out the inside centre going straight to Geneen who bagged a second. Maids then came under some pressure but lock Grant Shearer showed his skill with a big tackle on their huge No 8. This typified the good defensive work that Maids can produce when they are in command. Full back Wardle then produced a finely timed pass to send Greg Burgess over the line shortly before half time leading 20-0.

Maids were now comfortably in the driving seat and the second half saw 5 more tries and another one held up over the line despite Geneen’s efforts to ground it. Shortly after, Simon Standfast recovered the ball and drove over powerfully to secure his name on the scoresheet. Maids game wasnow proving too much for Redingensians, with the backs gaining ground with quick ball from scrum half Peter Neill, alternating with Alex Barnett. Indeed, yet another good run from winger Geneen, with excellent following up by Barnett, led to him scoring under the posts. Wardle converted. The forwards game was no less important with Sedler and Shire ensuring a good push to give the good early ball. Neill set the backs running yet again with Michael Rubber this time switching back inside to score a fine try. On the restart, the opposition was determined not to go down without a fight, and they might have broken through had it not been for some strong tackling from Jamie Plumer, Niels Pedersen and Ed Wilding. This led to another period of sustained pressure from Maids with Geneen putting in a great run, which was finished off by good supporting follow-up by Standfast. The final backs move led to another right wing Burgess run to score, sealing a convincing win over the Reading School boys club.
