U13s stunning performance against Bracknell

Maidenhead U13s gave another stunning performance in the Berkshire league at Braywick on Sunday with a shattering 67-0 victory over Bracknell. As the league programme reaches a climax, now more than ever Maids have cause to regret their one poor performance of the season, when they played poorly against Redingensians and lost.

Redingensians are now almost certain to run out league winners even though a comparison of their results against the other teams in the league shows Maidenhead to be around 20 points superior. A harsh lessons for players and coaches.

Bracknell had no answer to the power of Maidenhead in the forwards or to the superb combined play between backs and forwards which brought a total of 11 tries in all. Maidenhead's miserly defence allowed Bracknell not so much as a glimpse of the tryline. Maidenhead's support play and their rucking was particularly impressive.  Maidenhead were able to rotate their squad for much of the match, even keeping back their not-so-secret weapon, Mitchell Batten and Joe Thomas, until after half-time. Typically, flanker Batten scored two tries inside four minutes of the second half. Chris Richardson was immaculate at full-back, Patrick McSweeney managed to poach three Bracknell line-out throws and Andrew Jones was able to provide the back-row support for which the backs were looking.

Probably the outstanding player was Ryan Christian, in the centre. Christian's confidence rises by the week and he scored a searing hat-trick of tries, on one occasion taking a Bracknell kick-off and carving straight through half the Bracknell team to score underneath the posts. Apart from Batten's two tries, the other try-scorers were Sam Stefan, the captain, Elliott Hawkes, Tom Kay, Luke Knowles, Joe Thomas and Ashley Hanks. The try by Hanks was the most satisfying of all the 11. It came after a quickfire succession of five rucks near the Bracknell line before Hanks drove over to score.

Bracknell deserve the utmost credit for their attitude to the game because they kept their shape and never gave up. But they were up against a team which had too much for them in every department.

The Maidenhead squad was: Chris Richardson; Tom Lewis, Ryan Christian, Alasdair Bruce, Elliott Hawkes; Sam Stefan (capt), Ollie Styles; Patrick McSweeney, Tom Morgan, Jack Robinson, Chris Parrott, Tom Plumer, Luke Knowles, Tom Kay, Andrew Jones, Tom Hocking, Scott Lowden, Ashley Hanks, Joe Thomas, Mark Williams, Mitchell Batten
