Maids U13s turned up for their first league match of the season on a drizzly cold morning at Redingensians RFC. The morning proved to be a tough lesson in rugby for the squad....with a heavy loss of 49-0 the end outcome. This was a baptism of fire for the squad and an wake up call for the team for the future. The lack of follow through on the key areas of commitment, support, going forward and decision making showed up in stark contrast to recent results. Despite good showings in recent friendlies and practice sessions on this day the team failed to deliver in a number of areas. Redingensians ran in 9 tries and convert 2 of these in a fast paced game which saw the winger for Redingensians score 7 tries in some very impressive running. The Maids forwards failed to handle the Redingensians' forwards and despite no scores coming down the middle the physical contest was very one-sided up front. The lack of aggression from the forwards led to Redingensians getting far more control of the ball leaving the backs with a need to prepare a constant drifting defence. Maids backs also missed several crucial tackles and tactically came up short too. The team left the pitch both disappointed in their performance because they have so much more promise and skill - but on the day they were left wanting. The recent fixtures schedule has left little time for training sessions and this showed with Maids failing to build any multiple phase play. On lineouts and scrummaging the Maids forwards performed well but could not capitalise on this for points. The game had very little kicking and this made for a fast paced days rugby. This was a tough lesson for the squad and a difficult morning to come to terms with - that's rugby !! I can see a long session in front of the whiteboard coming up. The squad for the league match
was; Manning, Townsend (SL), Hedouin, Peach, Naish, O'Connor, Miles,
Ferrar, Alderson (C), Thomson, Boyd, Cadden, Hudson, Goldsmith, Foster,
Faulkner, Burnett, Roberts, Wright, Heron, Heley, Dowling |
