U13s overcome local rivals Beaconsfield Maidenhead U13s 54 Beaconsfield U13s
12 Maidenhead U13 took on Beaconsfield at Braywick last Sunday mindful that Beaconsfield had always given them problems in previous seasons in the mini-rugby age groups. Yet there was comprehensive revenge as Maidenhead, giving 25 players game time, won by 54-12. It was another splendid effort in what is becoming a highly-successful season. Maidenhead's tough forwards again played outstandingly, with Tom Morgan at hooker handling well in addition to his tight forward duties and with the power on the burst of Joe Thomas remarkably effective. The team had obviously benefited from a coaching session conducted by Harlequins coaches and even though Beaconsfield played with great courage and no little skill in the backs, they were overwhelmed. Behind the scrum, Maidenhead coped well with the continual changes of personnel designed to give the whole squad a game and Ollie Styles at scrum-half and Ryan Christian in the centre played superbly. Anthony Lewis and Gareth Townsend, two players new to the team this season, also showed excellent form. Perhaps the outstanding individual, however, was Luke Knowles in the back row. Maidenhead's Mr Consistency has yet to play badly for the club. Chris Parrott opened the scoring by weaving his way over after outstanding forward play and though Beaconsfield exerted five minutes of solid pressure after that. Maids held out. Christian, who had just made a try-saving tackle, came up smartly in defence to intercept and race over to score. Tom Kay also scored after a sweeping movement and the floodgates opened. The charging Thomas thundered over from a tap penalty, Kay scored his second after picking up at the back of a scrum and taking defenders over the line with him. And Scott Lowden, hungry for work, scored after an overlap was cleverly worked. The tireless Parrott scored his second and it was only justice that Knowles, running and handling with all the speed and dexterity of a centre, carved up the midfield for two more tries towards the end. Chris Richardson kicked two conversions and also bought off two outstanding tackles, each of which saved tries. Beaconsfield scored two excellent tries and one conversion. Towards the end came one of the best bits of play of the season. It started deep in Maidenhead's own half, was started by Tom Morgan, taken on by Elliot Hawkes then fed down the line though Alasdair Bruce, Lewis, Lowden and Townsend and the move petered out only in the final yards. But there could be few complaints. The squad was: |
