| It was
a game of three halves against Amersham & Chiltern at Braywick with
Maids working their way back into a friendly match divided into three
periods. Played in a continuous downpour on a windswept pitch, the visitors
started the brighter.
Maids didn't get the basics sorted, losing possession unnecessarily and not tackling effectively. Amersham were soon 5.0 in the lead as Maids sought to find a game plan. Any plan would have done at this stage. Matt Roberts and Jasper Vanderwalk looked lively but were isolated when they tried to break. David Walker, Sam Yates and Daniel Tydeman worked well but to no avail. The visitors ended the first period 5.0 up. Amersham extended their lead to 25.0 before Maids finally found their rhythm. Connor Murphy set up James Parrott to bravely crash through and put Maids on the scoreboard. It didn’t look good at the end of the second period, with the home side trailing 5.25, but by the final period, the boys had found some pace and were winning more possession from the rucks and mauls. Forwards Alex Jones and Ben Pritchard were making inroads into Amersham’s line. Amersham gave away numerous penalties and from one of these James Parrot rode several tackles to score again. Maids had moved up a gear by now and were playing some good rugby. A superb show of strength and pace by Oliver Evans resulted in a deserved third try as he outran Amersham’s flailing backs. Maids kept pushing forward, sensing that they might overturn the visitor’s lead. A typical darting run by Paul Sayers, swerving through half-hearted tackles gave Maids their fourth. The rain finally stopped as the match finished. In the end, it was a more respectable scoreline for Maids after an indifferent start. |
