U13s came within one match of ending a memorable season
on the highest possible note when they made an heroic
defence of the title they won as under-12s in the famous
Gullivers Junior rugby festival at Brean Sands, near
Burnham-on-Sea. The team played some fantastic rugby in a
tournament' which was of a standard far higher than their
normal regular season and it was only a narrow defeat in
a dramatic final game that finally ended their hopes.
They finished runners-up and won the Shield. The courage
of the squad in battling through some hard matches left a
lasting impression on the large group of parents which
supported the team. The crunch match was that against Aberavon Green Stars on the second day of competition. The Green Stars are not a well-known club at senior level but their U13 team was outstanding, the best the Maidenhead coaches had seen all season. It was large, physical and well organised. Maidenhead had to beat the Green Stars to take the title but in a compelling battle, full of heavy tackling and wonderful commitment, the Welsh team won by 8-0 to become champions. They thoroughly deserved their victory although their coaches were generous enough to point out that their own team was fresh whereas Maids had just battled through another colossal affair against the outstanding Moortown, the Yorkshire club. For the Aberavon match, Maids had to play without their talisman, the mighty Joe Thomas, the lock., Thomas suffered a serious nose injury against Moortown, with typical courage tried to play through the pain against Aberavon, but was forced to leave the field. Thomas was probably the player of the tournament and Maids sorely missed his presence. They lost to a penalty and a late try, the only time their line was crossed in the whole tournament - a tribute to a superb defence well marshalled by Alasdair Bruce at fly-half. It was noticeable that players like Tom Kay, Ollie Styles, Tom Morgan and Ryan Christian made Herculean efforts to drag the match back. The spirit of the team was remarkable. The scrum, with Ashley Hanks, Pat McSweeney and Jack Robinson the foundation stones, was never beaten in the tournament. |

| The team had set off with three brilliant performances on day one. They beat Basingstoke by 41-0. The try-scores were captain Sam Stefan, Tom Lewis, Ollie Styles, Joe Thomas (2), Luke Knowles and Andrew Hogan, who was making a successful comeback after a shoulder injury. Tom Hocking's craft in the centre led to three of the tries. | |||

| Maidenhead v Westcombe Park | |||
| The final match on day 1 brought a 33-0 victory over Westcombe Park. Tom Lewis marshalled the team expertly at fly-half and the two grafting locks, Chris Parrott and Tom Plumer, scored tries. The outstanding Kay scored another two and Stefan kicked four conversions and added a try - this came when Andrew Foot, the wing finding his best form, was stopped just short. | |||

| Lineout against Moortown | |||
| The dangerous Moortown were first up on the second day and Maidenhead's victory by 7-3 was arguably their best performance of the season. Maids began explosively, with a dynamic attack launching the deadly Antony Lewis over for a try. Bruce kicked a conversion and a penalty but after that, with Moortown kicking a penalty, Maids had to hold on for dear life. The defence of the likes of Luke Knowles and Christian was remarkable but it was in this game that Mitchell Batten played one of the great matches. The flanker was at the spearhead of a Maids forward drive, which took the ball out of dire danger in their own corner almost to halfway. It made gripping viewing as Maids held on. | |||

| Scrum against Moortown | |||
| The resistance was similarly heroic against the Green Stars and there were more than a few tears on the final whistle. However, coaches Paul Morgan, Ed Parrott, Keith "Champagne" Knowles and Richard Robinson were able to reflect on a season of vast improvement and outstanding team spirit.
