U13s brave performance at Saracens
Saracens U13s 24 v Maidenhead U13s 7
Sunday 5th March 2000
| Maidenhead Under 13s put up
a brave performance away at Saracens on Sunday. The home
side have traditionally fielded useful teams at this age
group, and this years opposition certainly
maintained their impressive reputation. The first half was a desperately close affair, with Maids playing most of the rugby. The Braywick side were unlucky not to score following a clever kick down wind by fly half Alex Barnett. The Saracens full back had to retreat fully 30 metres and had trouble fielding the awkwardly bouncing ball. This gave flying winger David Geneen the chance to close in, forcing his man into a panic pass, which was intercepted by Matthew Wardle. Wardle was finally stopped with a last gasp tackle close to the Sarries line and the ball was eventually cleared. The Braywick side also endured some heart stopping moments as Saracens showed their attacking prowess. A cleverly placed grubber kick right into the corner forced Maids to throw in right on their own line. Both locks, Carl Corcoran and Adrian Griffiths, had been dominant in the air to date, and another fine catch gave scrum half Peter Neill to chance to clear. Still scoreless, the second half started in similar fashion. Sarries had the advantage of possession retention in the tight, but the visitors backs put together a number of slick passing moves allowing wingers Tom Robinson and Geneen to make good ground with strong runs. When the Maids forwards were able to exert pressure, hooker Grant Shearer was particularly impressive, along with his props James Emmanuel and Kaz Jasnikowski. The deadlock was finally broken after the home side were awarded a series of penalties, the last culminating in a dive for the line from close range. Despite a valiant effort from Thurlough OConnor and Ben Sedler to hold man and ball up, Sarries were awarded the try. Saracens wasted no time in adding to their lead with a fine individual effort from their left winger, to score a try under the posts, but the Braywick side were not down and out yet. From the kick off, Wardle found touch ten metres from the Sarries line. Again, Maids won the line out through Corcoran, and his catch and drive proved unstoppable as he bulldozed his way over the line for a fine try. Wardle successfully converted to put Maids right back in the match at 12-7. Spurred on, Maids continued to play rugby, centres Michael Rubber and Simon Standfast moved the ball wide, while Adrian Griffiths made two surging runs through the middle to set up good field position. Alex Barnett was also proving difficult to handle with his darting runs and Tom Robinson made a number of eye-catching tackles, when needed, in defence. Neils Pedersen, Daniel Fair and Harrison Shire all joined in the action with valuable contributions. So, it was against the run of play when Sarries closed out the match, with what only could be described as two breakaway tries. Both were converted to leave the visitors disappointed with a 24-7 defeat after an extremely well matched encounter. |
