Maidenhead master Marlow in the mud

Marlow U13s 5 Maidenhead U13s 35
Sunday 4th February 2001

Maidenhead's U13 match against Marlow had to be switched to the Marlow ground with Braywick awash and the conditions at Marlow were almost as bad, with the pitch disappeared in a sea of mud. Considering the dreadful conditions, the appetite and ability of both the teams was exemplary. Maidenhead's commitment and mastery of the conditions resulted in a 35-5 victory.

Maidenhead, Marlow & Mud

The scoring hero was Joe Thomas, the Maidenhead lock whose fitness and general impact improves every week. Thomas crossed for a hat-trick, on one memorable occasion appearing to crash through almost the whole of the tenacious Marlow defence. Tom Kay added another two to his long list of tries for the season. The other scorers  were Luke Knowles, the flanker, and Ryan Christian, whose confidence is improving rapidly. Christian was often under pressure as the soap-like ball came back to him in the centre but he coped superbly. Chris Richardson at full-back also coped brilliantly with a series of dangerous, sliding Marlow kicks and Elliot Hawkes was arguably the man of the match, typically tenacious in the backs.

Maidenhead's Muddy Marauders

In the forwards, Maidenhead's pack were hard-working. Patrick McSweeney continued his recent vast improvement, carrying the ball well. Andrew Jones excelled in support play, one of the team's weak areas. Christopher Parrott's ball-carrying was also a marvel given the conditions. However, there was no-one in Maidenhead's 23-man squad who did not play a full part and great credit should also go to Marlow, for staging the game at all and for putting up a tremendous fight. Their late try was well-deserved.
