It was a late, late show from the U13s as they nearly let slip a game they deserved to win. The squad showed great resilience and determination to fight back after Staines had edged into a lead with only minutes remaining. Having cruised to a 17.0 lead in the first of four quarters of 15 minutes play, Maids let Staines dictate the following two periods and the home side gained a slender advantage going into a battle in the finale where Maids stormed infront with the final move of the match. Ben Pritchard scored in the opening 30 seconds after Charlie Wickham-Smith cleanly collected Staines kick off. A few minutes later Thomas Simpson ran clear down the left wing to double the lead. Good mauling skills by Michael James and Dan Tydeman helped give Maids the upper hand. Adam Roels, Tristan Cadden and David Walker played well. Jasper van der Walk’s try and Simpson’s conversion suggested a comfortable win was on the cards. But Staines upped their game, ground away with their strong pack and landed three tries and two conversions to pull the score back to 22.19 with only a Simpson try in reply after good tackling by TJ Hudson. Matt Bill and Matt Quinn ran well with the ball but with everything to play for in the last quarter, it was Staines who scored again and then put up a great defence. Oliver Evans won a penalty five metres out and Maids cranked up the pressure. Morgan Davies bravely charged through a crowded defence after prolonged Maids attacking and Simpson converted to make it 29 - 24. |
