U13s in Marcus Krübler tournament at Beaconsfield

Sunday 1st April 2001

The U13s took part in a memorial tournament at Beaconsfield on Sunday in which they played in a series of five short matches against strong opposition.

Maidenhead v London Irish
Maidenhead v London Irish

In their first game against London Irish the Maids got straight into the London Irish half moving steadily forward contributing to a great team try from Ryan Christian. London Irish retaliated driving forward and making a run towards the line but Ryan Christian made a tremendous run and tackled him just short of the line. Despite London Irish going onto win a penalty near their try line the Maids defended well with Chris Parrott doing some effective tackles and moved the ball back down the pitch with Alasdair Bruce keeping well forward ably supported by Sam Stefan, the ball went into a ruck by Jack Robinson timely hooked the ball out passing it to Jo Thomas who drove forward to the line passing at the last minute to Ryan Christian to score for a second time.
London Irish kept up the pressure but the Maids were again on the attack and Joe Thomas saw a window of opportunity to break through and ran unchallenged to bring the final score to 15-0. London Irish had only two opportunities during the whole game to score, which Maidenhead successfully diverted.

Maidenhead v Marlow
Maidenhead v Marlow
In their second game against Marlow the Maids started well, getting the ball into their half of the pitch at an early stage but Marlow showed they had the edge on this occasion and we were entertained with quite ferocious play with some excellent work from Tom Morgan in which possession passed back and forth. The Maids defence was fantastic throughout and the 0-0 final score was a fair result.

Maidenhead lineout v Amersham & Chiltern
Lineout v Amersham & Chiltern
The Maids went onto play Amersham and Chiltern and were straight in keeping on the attack moving down the pitch, they won the scrum and Joe Thomas broke through and drove forward to the line to score. Patrick McSweeney caught the ball from the kick off and drove forward, Amersham & Chiltern took possession but the Maids went onto win the line out, Sam Stefan took it forward passed out to Tom Lewis on the wing, Amersham tackled and passed the ball down their line to the opposite wing, Ryan Christian halted their progress, and although the ball went back into Amersham’s possession it was not long before Oliver Styles got their man down with an impressive tackle, Tom Plummer took the ball and helped to keep up the momentum and despite a near try the score remained 5 -0 at half time.
The Maids developed a quick ball from the three quarter line after kick off going onto win the scrum, Scott Lowden got the ball and moved forward giving them space, Mark Williams hooked the ball from the ruck and passed to Tom Kay tackled and ran unchallenged towards the line passing out to Drew Allen who was pushed into touch just short of the line. Play centred near the Maidenhead try line for some time and despite many attempts by the team and a sterling attempt by Joe Thomas to move the ball towards the line the Maids did not succeed and the final score remained 5-0.

Maidenhead press the Richmond line
Maidenhead press the Richmond line
The Maids met their biggest challenge of the day in the fourth game against Richmond who showed their strength with an early try running unchallenged from the half way line to score. The Maids held their heads high but despite their own strength Richmond again broke through with a repeat performance. The Maids retaliated and Sam Stefan did an excellent tackle, but Richmond edged them back and scored again. The Maids managed to keep the ball down in their half of the pitch and won a free kick, Mitch Batten drove forward with determination passed to Joe Thomas but Richmond defended well and the Maids lost their chance to score in the first half.
In the second half the Maids once again got the ball down towards their try line, fighting hard to break through, Andrew Jones tackled hard and Luke Knowles got the ball and drove forward but Richmond got possession once again and ran once again from the half way line to score. The Maids came back with a vengeance and their hard work was rewarded with a well deserved try by Mitch Batten. They quickly got the ball down to near their try line but failed to score in time for the finish. This was a game in which the Maids did well to get the ball into their half of the pitch but each time failed to challenge Richmond’s secret weapon.
Maidenhead scrum v Richmond
Maidenhead scrum v Richmond

In their final game the Maids played Beaconsfield in which the teams seemed equally matched at the start with play remaining around the half way line but Beaconsfield made an unexpected break through and ran to the line to score, closely followed by another. From the scrum Alasdair Bruce passed out to Tom Kay who drove forward, Beaconsfield took possession, Chris Parrott did another excellent tackle, Beaconsfield took possession and passed the ball down the line to the opposite wing, Chris Richardson, Sam Stefan and Ryan Christian each tackled in succession but Beaconsfield still managed to keep possession and broke through yet again to score. Form being 15-0 down at half time the Maids came back on the attack and were justly rewarded by a try by Joe Thomas which Alasdair expertly converted. Despite a comeback by Beaconsfield the Maids were on guard and kept them back. From the scrum Tom Kay drove forward, he was tackled and the ball went into a ruck, Mitch Batten hooked it out and passed it to Tom Hocking but Beaconsfield got possession and ran almost the full length of the pitch, Tom Hocking followed close behind unsupported and his sterling attempt came very close to halting the try. Maids retaliated and moved the ball back down towards their line gaining a penalty try. Beaconsfield went on the attack but the Maids with spirits undaunted Ashley Hanks got the ball and charged forward passing out onto the wing, from the scrum Maidenhead worked tremendously hard and were rewarded with a third try by Mitch Batten in the final seconds.

The Maids came third in what was an enjoyable and challenging day, and a fitting memorial to the late Marcus Krübler.
