U12s try fest against Beaconsfield

Sunday 22nd January 2006

Perhaps inspired by the 1st XV’s romp the day before, both Maidenhead squads enjoyed comfortable victories over visitors Beaconsfield on Sunday.

After a joint training session running through some basic skills two squads were formed, with two regular A squad members generously volunteering to make up the numbers in the 2nd squad which was slightly depleted in the backs vs normal weeks.

The A squad found itself facing a solid and committed set of forwards, but played their best rugby of the season to more than match them up front and to apply a combination of pace and power in the backs that lead to a series of excellent tries.

The first of these was a real beauty, as full back Sam Maguire caught a long Beaconsfield kick at pace and then accelerated through several tackles before cruising down the wing to touch down. Fraser Brooks converted this, and was in action shortly afterwards to add a further conversion once Leo Smith broke through on an impressive solo run to score. The third try of the half came from prop Markus Olivier, taking “route 1” from about 15 metres out: he looked up, focused on a spot just over the try line directly in front of him, put his head down and charged. No-one could stop him and Fraser once again slotted the conversion.

Just to show he’s not just about power, Markus then proceeded to double his tally in the 2nd half, sprinting up the wing. Duncan Jones, multi-skilled 2nd row forward, hit the conversion. Perhaps inspired by his fellow front row’s scoring exploits, Alex Avery rounded things off for Maids, peeling off the back of a ruck to crash over and leave it up to Leo Smith to add the final two points. Final score: Maids 35 – Beaconsfield 0.
The squad: Markus Olivier, Alex Avery, Danny Keir, Michael Trevena, Edward Kaye, Josh Edney, Duncan Jones, Dominik Bart, LD Basson, Luke Thomas, Fraser Brooks, Daniel Andrews-Jones, Leo Smith, Max O’Connor, Chris Dow, Sam Maguire

Not to be outdone, the 2nd Maids squad were scoring even more tries, perhaps the most impressive of which was one of the simplest, as scrum half Jonathan Perry released the backs, William Thompson in the centre took the ball at pace to break the line, drew his man and passed to Gareth Orwin to score. Steven Carn commenced his virtuoso kicking display with the conversion.

Great running and passing in the backs lead to a feast of further tries, with Shiv Khindria, Jonathan Perry, Steven Carn, Dhruv Surya, William Thompson and Thomas Eckles (2) all touching down. To cap another fine performance in the pack, Hal Orchard claimed one for the forwards to round things off. Steven Carn converted all 9 tries! Final score: Maids 63 – Beaconsfield 0.
