U12s at the Maidenhead Tournament

Sunday 15th October 2000

Maidenhead Under 12's took 15 boys from their squad to their own tournament last Sunday, spending the day in glorious sunshine. The tournament was played as a league table requiring each team to play five matches and score 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 for a loss.

The first match was against the last year winners Haslemere who arrived determined to do business!! They went quickly into the lead powering through the startled Maidenhead lads to score the first of two tries. 0-10. Maidenhead began to respond and play took an upward turn when strong tackling from Ed Davison, Michael Edwards then Dean Rogers prevented Haslemere from breaking through again and Dean Rogers scooped up a dropped ball, played the advantage well and opened the scoring for the Maids (5-10)

The second half saw the Haslemere team regain the upper hand despite Maids coming close to scoring through Robert Mayner but they were denied on the line. By the end of the match Haslemere had increased their lead to 20 -5, the last try scored just before the final whistle.

The second match was against Winchester. The first half was neat rugby as Maids put all they had been coached in to practise, passing the ball well between the backs and opening up gaps to break through three times to score. Two tries from Tom Miller and the third following an excellent tackle from Ed Davison. Half time score was 15 - 0. Winchester rallied for the second half and scored first so Dean Rogers felt obliged to charge through several players to notch up another try. 20 -5 Winchester ended the scoring with a consolation try to end the match at 20 - 10 win for the Maids

The third match drew Maids against a tough Cleve side, much improved since last meeting Maidenhead.

The match was a battle from start to finish and Maids were the first to capitalise. Karl Clark enjoyed his new sport and took a turn hooking the ball out from the scrum, doing well so the ball was released out for play. Strong Joel Rivers used his power to find the line and the half time score was 5 -0. The second half saw Maids miss out on taking further lead when a pass from Davison sent Edwards into space timing the pass well when caught out to Tom Cracknell who sprinted towards the try line. An incredible tackle from Cleve stopped him short of the line and after this play headed towards the other end of the pitch. Despite concerted defensive efforts from David Sewell and Guy Kynaston Cleve were able to break through and score the equaliser. A draw at 5 -5

The fourth match was against local rivals Windsor who were keen to beat Maidenhead as they have done in the past. This was probably the most measurable noted improvement of the day when the Maids boys not only scored four tries between them but they also prevented a physical Windsor team from scoring at all. The ball was passed around well and the forwards were quick onto the rucks when play broke down securing the possession for Maids and the momentum was continued forward at all times. Lee Rawlings was happy to open the scoring, followed by Dean Rogers and then before the half time whistle Michael Ward, three tries a reward for the work put in from the forwards on the pitch. The second half saw a further try from Dean Rogers making his days tally four. Final score 20 -0

The final fifth match was against Ruislip who are slippery customers! The team had the highest proportion of "big boys" and serious tackles were required from Maids to prevent them taking over the game. Maidenhead started the game knowing that they had to win to secure second place in the tournament, Ruislip could settle for a draw or win to keep second place so it was a deciding match for the lads.

Brave breaks for the line by Corryn Singh and Tom Miller were thwarted before they could break the stalemate, so William Ewart tried kicking over the top of play to turn the Ruislip lads but this was defended as well. All credit to both teams there was near scores at each end but the match ended with a 0 - 0 draw giving Ruislip the upper hand and second place.

Overall the coaches were pleased with the boys and settled for 2 wins, 2 draws and 1 defeat, not bad for the first tournament seeing a changed group of boys play well together as a team!

The squad consisted of Karl Clark, Tom Cracknell, Ed Davison, Michael Edwards, William Ewart, Guy Kynaston, Robert Mayne, Tom Miller, Richard Parker, Lee Rawlings, Joel Rivers, Dean Rogers, David Sewell, Corryn Singh, Michael Ward
