Two Maidenhead Under 12 teams put in excellent performances against a talented line-up of seven visiting clubs at this year’s Maidenhead Youth Rugby tournament, held on Sunday 10 October.

Sharks
The Sharks hosted Windsor, Marlow and Henley plus teams from Buckingham, Haslemere, Winchester and Cleve.

Having held Haslemere 0.0 in an evenly fought opening encounter the Sharks beat Buckingham with a well-worked try from Michael Habgood, after the team’s hard driving forwards won their scrum. Tenacious Scrum Half Sam Yates set Backs Morgan Davies, TJ Hudson and Ed Sears on numerous searching runs. Paul Sayers almost doubled the lead right at the end but was halted on the line.

Next, the Sharks narrowly lost to local rivals Henley 5.0. They dominated possession in a much-improved second half with Ben Pritchard, James Parrott, Tristan Cadden and Miguela Kerrins outstanding. Rory Creffield, Matt Roberts and Oliver Evans also displayed huge determination and good technical skills.

Tournament winners Cleve proved too strong and took an early two-try lead. But the Sharks bit back and pegged Cleve on their 10-metre line for long periods.

A good driving run by Alex Ridgeway set up Sharks’ try against Winchester. His pass sent Pritchard storming to inside 10 metres where Charlie Wickham-Smith won the maul and drove over. Winchester countered with two tries.

Marlins
The Marlins showed just how much they have improved this season with an emphatic 25.0 win over Windsor in their first game. Paul Sweeney opened the scoring, with Owen Haughey (2), Elliot Reid, Mike James putting the finishes touches to a series of great flowing moves.

Reid and Haughey scored in the win over Haslemere, which saw some great rucking skills from forwards James Holt and Alex Jones and good hands from backs George Kirk, Ashley Marshall, Daniel Tydeman, David Walker.

Some of the boys’ best play came against stronger teams from Marlow, Winchester and winners, Cleve. Forwards Mathew Quinn and Dimitri Pressland were strong in the rucks and mauls while backs Seb Owen, Ben Peppiatt and captain for the day Tom Bunn ended the tournament in fine style.
