Sun shines on U12s for Amersham & Chiltern visit

Maidenhead U12s 12 Amersham & Chiltern U12s 14
Sunday 5th March 2006

A&C Under 12s arrived en masse on Sunday and a series of great games played in very good spirit followed. There were just over 70 players in attendance enabling three matches to take place, and we were very pleased when some of the A&C boys stayed on to participate in the Kicking Competition. Try count was even for the two clubs on the day, but A&C took the glory based on conversions! Arguably we mis-matched the 2nd and 3rd matches in our haste to organise three sides, as the results were complete opposites: a convincing win for A&C 2nds, and an equally resounding win for the Maids side playing A&C 3rds. The key was that everyone got to play and some good rugby was seen in all games.

The A squad were interested to see what awaited them, as despite a draw against A&C at the Saracens' Festival, research showed A&C had recently beaten our local rivals Windsor by 8 tries to 1! Comments on the A&C site suggest they were expecting an easy game ("Maidenhead are no Sandal"), but in the end it was very competitive and had Maids not contrived to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory A&C might have gone home disappointed!

Maids forwards had perhaps their best game of the season so far, and so it was perhaps fitting that both their tries were from the pack. On the other hand there was less fluency in the back line than we have seen, though some excellent defence, particularly from Will Thompson and Daniel Andrews-Jones.

Maids took the lead when Markus Olivier crashed over, and Will Thompson slotted the conversion. The side then lost concentration, however, and some quick thinking from A&C at a tap penalty saw them score in the corner whilst Maids looked on. Stung by this, Maids upped the pressure once again and Dominik Bart came away from a maul where the pack had recycled the ball well to force his way over. This time a cruel gust of wind forced the conversion onto the post and it fell the wrong way.

A&C are a really good team, and clearly one that expects to win, so the pressure mounted as the 2nd half seemed to go on and on. Maids defence seemed to have things under control, though the side showed few signs of being able to break out of their own half. Suddenly an attempted clearance kick was sliced, A&C grabbed it and fed their winger to score. Two tries apiece, but A&C's 2nd conversion crushing Maids' hopes, with not enough time left to do anything about it.

Final score: 12 - 14. A great game.
