Great Scott! - Strength in depth shows for U11s vs Wycombe and Redingensians Sunday 13th February 2005 |

Half term meant a depleted (!) squad of 32 turned out on a bitterly cold morning at Redingensians to compete in this triangualr fixture. The only disappointment was that both our hosts and Wycombe had one squad only with them, meaning that our B squad had a tough morning ahead. Despite the physical disadvantage, the B's did themselves proud, with fantastic defensive play from all, but particular praise due to Jonathan Perry, Iain Whiteford, Piers Baron and 'storming' Hal Orchard - the only forward able to compete on even terms with the sizeable opposition. The holidays meant that the A squad welcomed several new members (exacerbating the B's challenge) including Danny Kier, Edward Kaye, Josh Spooner and Jacob Sanders. Strength in depth and improvement in the squad as a whole showed through, as Maids cruised through both their games. First opponents were High Wycombe, and a sustained period of pressure in the first half, with continuous driving from the ever improving Alex Avery, resulted in a try for William Thompson after a great break from scrum half Sam Scott. Maids had the best of the game, but couldn't quite get through, and good Wycombe kicks required attention from Duncan Jones at full back. Wycombe never really threatened, however, and in the second half a good break set Chris Dow free to score a decisive 2nd try. Final score: 10 - 0. The next game was against Redingenisans, who traditionally play a strong forward game. The conditions were not in favour of a running game, but Maids produced some of their best rugby of the season, with great interplay between forwards (notably Jacob Sanders) and backs. Player of the day Sam Scott opened the scoring with a fantastic pick up of loose ball, and a combined team effort saw the ball go from prop Ed Kaye to hooker Danny Kier before centre Daniel Andrews-Jones released Leo Smith to take the side into half time with a 10-0 advantage. There was more good play in both attack and defence in the second half, with the side moving the ball well and players runnin great support lines. Daniel Andrews-Jones finished well to cap a great performance and Sam Scott - who else! - finshed things off with a tremendous scrum-half "snipe" off the back of a scrum on the blind side. |
