U11s triangluar with Bath & Saracens

January 28th 2001

A triangular match involving 6 games x 15mins took place on a cold frosty morning at Braywick Sports Ground with each Club fielding enough players to provide two squads each.

Game one: Maidenhead Lions v Saracens (A)

This first game saw old rivals Saracens meet Maids for the third time this season ( having drawn at Maidenhead’s Tournament in October and also seen the Lions run out winners at Saracens own Tournament in November.

Good all round forward play from Toby Harrison, Guy Sears and Ryan began to show through as Maids attacked at each opportunity. The backs from both sides were engaged in good attacking moves and counter moves. And the first try came from forward play as Jonathan Lowther passed to Paul Roberts who managed to give Luke Fletcher the chance to power down the right flank and drive over for the first try. Alex Roberts converted to enable Maids to win.

Score: Maids 7- Saracens 0

Game three: Maidenhead Lions vs Bath (A)

Bath had travelled up from the west country with a well drilled squad of players. Both the Bath forwards and backs began to probe and test out Maids, as the game unfolded with good attacking and defending from both teams. The game ebbed and flowed with Baths forwards winning much of their own scrums. However, strong tackling from Alexander Hanks and Christian Shepherd prevented Bath from breaking through to score. Lineouts were well contested by Robin Scanlon, Guy Sears, Jason Merritt and Toby Harrison. Bath won more possession from loose rucks and demonstrated better technique in winning loose ball by driving through.

The game was exciting for both parents and coaches to watch and enjoy.

Score: Maids 0 - Bath 0

Game four: Maidenhead Tigers vs Saracens (B)

This game exploded from the kick off with knock on by the Maids forwards. They soon recovered and demonstrated their ability to use good attacking play. The Forwards namely Clark Hillier and Mckeown worked hard to win and retain possession creating the first scoring opportunity down the wing for Chris Bradbury to put down. Guy Sears supported he forwards and lend strength to scrums and loose mauls. Following the kick off, the Tigers were able to attack the defence and enable Jason Merritt to drive through and score. Guy Swaddling (full back) converted both first half tries and make some penetrating runs across the field, linking well with Rick Blacker.

In the second half the forwards began to win a majority of the scrums, lineouts and rucks and the possession led to Clark driving over to score a well worked try. Chris Bradbury scored another following linking play from Joe Dutton (sh), Angus Cadden (ic), and William Brennan (oc). Alex Roberts (fh) converted both to bring the score to:

Maids 27 - Saracens 0

Game six : Maidenhead Tigers vs Bath ( B )

Bath caught Maidenhead on the hop, from the kick -off which was knocked on, and managed to move the ball quickly from the penalty to run over on the right wing. This was the first of three Bath quick tries and conversions, caused in part by the drop out return kicks.

However, Maids rallied and the forwards and backs started to work together to create some exciting running rugby. In fact they drove over once but it was deemed to have been held up on the line. M Hiller drove over with help from Mckeown and Clark, with conversion by Guy Swaddling. In the second half the forwards continued to attack the Bath Line and Guy Sears managed to drive over from 5 mts, before conversion by Alex Roberts.

Score: Maids 14 - Bath (B) 21
