KERINS CASHES IN WITH TRY SCORING BONANZA Maids U 11s had a gruelling weekend of rugby last weekend. First up for the battle hardened Maids' U 11 A squad was a curtain raising event for the Maids 1st team senior squad game against Abbey at Braywick on Saturday. Although the U11 squad was missing several key players due to half term, they took the game to Abbey immediately with the forwards dominating possesion and driving Abbey back and forcing them to play most of the first half within their own 15 yard line. Maids Centre Colin Kerins ran amok and ran over three superb tries. Abbey pulled back a consolation try just before half time however this was very much against the run of play. The second half saw the Maids pack again totally dominate the scrum and this allowed the Maids backs to produce some great flowing rugby. Kerins secured the first try of the second half and his fourth try of the game. After a concerted push forward Second row forward Cameron Foster took up the initiative and scored an excellent solo try to secure the game for Maids. Prop Marcus Bateson returned
to the A team after injury and narrowly missed getting on to the score
sheet on two occasions. Second row forward Michael Corio also joined
the A team squad for the first time and put in a great solid performance
too. On Sunday the squad made the
long trip along the M4 to Chippenham. These two teams have clashed
many times in the past with mixed results for Maids. Chippenham are
a tough team and their pack heavilly outweighed the Maids forwards.
Undaunted and with confidence brimming from their dominant performance
the previous day, Maids entered the first half with solid determination
to overwhelm the Chippenham defence. The first half was a very even
battle with both sides overturning possesion and forcing some heroic
try saving tackles from Maids full back Oliver Saunders. Eventually
Colin Kerins took possesion and with the momentum of the forwards
driving the Chippenham defence backwards he scored a scrappy try to
give Maids a well deserved lead. However, with their eye off the ball
and feeling they'd done enough to secure the 1st half Maids conceded
yet another weak try just before half time. The second half was a
bruising encounter and on several occasions Maids were required to
defend their line with a dogged determination. Eventually Maids strength
in depth and match fitness paid off and Prop Marcus Bateson secured
the winning try and settled what was a tough and bruising game.
