U11s are comeback Kings
Winchester U11s v Maidenhead U11s
Sunday 12th March 2000
| Maidenhead under 11 team travelled
to Winchester for a three period match on Sunday to allow
both teams chance to play all their players. The first period was a very close affair with both teams taking time to settle down and find their rhythm. Maids came close to opening the scoring when excellent scrummaging from the powerful Guy Kynaston and David Sewell won the scrum against the head several times but despite neat passing out and one cleverly worked blind side move from Michael Edwards , Dean Rogers and Tom Lees - Fitzgibbon the ball was dropped on the line in a tackle and the try didn't count. At the end of the first period neither team had managed to score. The second period was a very different affair and the Winchester outfit seemed to break free and scored two tries and conversions taking the score to 0 - 14. There was only one answering response that came close from Dean Rogers and Robert Mayne but Rogers was pushed into touch short of the line. Before the end of the second period finished Winchester scored again but hit the bar with the conversion and the score settled at 0 -19. The third and final period was started with the Maids trying to forget the previous score and play a determined game to try and stem the flow of Winchester scores. From the outset the pressure was on and Maidenhead were quick with their first attack of the try line when a well placed kick from Tom Lees was picked up by Edwards who just failed to get the pass away as he was stopped on the line.Following a scrum for a knock on by Winchester the ball was won neatly and in open play Michael Ward picked up the loose ball and powered throught he opposition to open Maids score (5-19) Tom Lees - Fitzgibbon stepped up the convert the score to 7 -19 Having broken their duck Maids were up and running and passes out from the centre to William Ewart playing on the right wing saw him score in the corner and once again Lees- Fitzgibbon converted.!4 -19 Having won a line out on Winchesters throw in the ball was collected by Tom Cracknell and he sneaked through to take the score to 19 -19 and that left Tom Lees- Fitzgibbon to step up once again to see what he could do under pressure. Thankfully he kicked well and the score was now 21 - 19!! With Winchester now on the defensive they sent a kick way down the field which Tom Cracknell playing as full back caught well and ran it back to within scoring reach of the line when the whistle was blown for final time, never mind perhaps they wouldn't have scored again ! Who Knows? A good effort, great team work and a victory that seemed a long time in arriving. |
