U11s runners up at Burnham-on-Sea
5-6th May 2001
The season ended on a high for Maids U11 squad who won through to the Cup final to finish second to Cobham. Two days of intensive competition saw the squad pitted against a total of 16 other teams competing at Burnham-on-Sea. The players, coaches and parents enjoyed good weather, a holiday camp atmosphere and chance to meet old rivals over this annual Bank Holiday pilgrimage to Somerset. On there way to the final Maids won all their games with a fine display of open attacking rugby, balanced between strong forward play and incisive attacking back play. In the first game against "Old Ruts" Paul Roberts ran through to score tries in both halves to record a 10-0 win, following good forward play from the pack. This was followed by ball winning support play from Robin Scanlon and tries from Mark Lucas, Rick Blacker and Chris Bradbury to record win number two 30-0 against "Sandbach Lions". Game Three saw Maids play "Rugby Lions" and utilise a total passing game to enable Oliver Woodward, Robert Whittle and Paul Roberts to win 20-0. The final game of day aginst "Hertford" witnessed the squads strength with Chris Bradbury scoring 3 tries after linking well with good passing between Jamie Ford, Angus Cadden, Daniel Thompson and Toby Courtney. The second day exploded against "Lichfield" but Alexander Hanks, Woodword and Swadling showed strong attacking flair in recorded three tries to enable Maids to win 15 - 0. Chill winds greeted Maids as they once again used the squad talent to enable both Ryan Sherwin, Mark Lucas and George Colbourne to score against "Stroud". Although Stroud came back to record a try in the first half Maids benefited from tries from Jason Merritt and Woodword to win 20 -5 . High noon saw stiff competition in the game against Llandaff where Welsh pride, passion, strength and toughness was matched by Maids record their seventh win by a single try (5-0). The final was delayed by three hours due to plate and bowl finals in readiness for the main U11 Final between "Maidenhead" and "Cobham" Both teams fearlessly attacking the other with both forwards and backs. Special mention to Guy Sears(P), Toby Harrison(P), Will Page(H), Christian Shepherd(SR)and Jason Merritt(SR) for taking on Cobham in the rucks, mauls and line- outs, and winning valuable ball. Time and again Cobham defended their own goal line to deny the pack from scoring. Robert Whittle(SH) Paul Roberts (FH) Guy Swaddling (IC) George Colbourne (OC) and Alex Hanks(RW) Oliver Woodwood (LW) and Alex Roberts (FB) constantly probed Cobhams defence but were caught by quick counter attacks at the end of each half to record their one loss by 0 -10. The whole squad were proud of their achievements and celebrated in style. |
