U11s at the Marlow Tournament

Sunday 2nd April 2000

Maidenhead travelled to local rivals Marlow to take part in their tournament on Sunday.

Their first match was against Slough, and as quite a close affair. From a promising start when Slough's kick off was caught well by Guy Kynaston and set up deftly by the forwards for Michael Edwards to smuggle the ball out to the backs we saw the first move for the line begin. Perry Jansen made a convincing run and off loaded to Robert Mayne who nearly made it but was pushed in to touch close to the line. Slough threw in to the lineout but Maids reclaimed the ball, and William Younger sneaked through the blind side gap and scored in the corner. At half time the score was 5 -0

The second half saw one notable attempt at a try when Jansen at Full back caught the long kick from Slough and ran it straight back to them, passing on to William Ewart who found touch with the help of Slough rather than the try line. Final score win 5 –0.

The second match was against Marlow and as always a hard fought one. Marlow as usual started strongly and scored an early try exploiting the gift of missed tackles. By the end of the first half they had scored again and the score was 10 -0. The second half was much better for Maidenhead, far better defensive tackles were made and more forward movement particularly on the right wing from Robert Mayne, unfortunately there was no score from the Maids but neither were Marlow able to. Final score defeat 0 -10. Marlow went on to be the group leaders at the end of the league games.

The third match was against Redingensians. Once again we saw strong play from the forwards David Sewell, Michael Ward and Guy Kynaston and the resulting rolling maul laid the ball back for the pass out to the backs and with Perry Jansen running into the line to make an extra man the score was neat to watch making it 5-0.

The second try came as Maidenhead were awarded a penalty and Michael Edwards took it quickly exploiting the 10 metre rule and thereby evading tackles running through the final players for the line to make the score 10–0. The third try from the Maids was made and finished off by a William with William Ewart starting of the move and when he could see no way through passed to the supporting William Younger who made the score 15 –0. Maids rested too well then and were caught napping before half time by a surprise try against the run of play in that half. Half time score 5 -15.

The second half was a more even battle with the only score from Redingensians leaving the Maids with their second win of the day 15 -5

Maidenhead's fourth match was against Cheltenham and sadly was the second defeat of the day. By half time the score was 0 -10 despite some strong tackles from Tom Lees Fitzgibbon and Tom Miller to try and prevent this. The second half saw a further try from the Cheltenham outfit as maids were forced to concede defeat to the stronger team who were eventual group runners up.0 -15 loss.

Maidenhead's last match of the day was against Aylesbury and the first half was scoreless and saw Jansen leaving the pitch after a high tackle left him unable to carry on. The second half opened up and there was three pleasing tries scored , the first from Robert Mayne who had worked tirelessly all day and the second from Tom Miller who made an electric run, dodging players and finding the line. Jordan Haynes was keen to join in and wrestled his way through several players only to be stopped short of the line.

To finish off one of the forwards got his rewards on the score sheet with hooker Michael Ward powering over taking half the Aylesbury team with him Final score 15 -0

Maidenhead may not have won anything but as a team played well, showing improvements all round and a good basis for building on.

MATCH REPORTS UNDER 11 B TEAM

Maidenhead under 11B Team fared very well at the Marlow tournament on Sunday. With only enough players available to form one team without any substitutes the boys all had to play hard for each game.

The first game was against the normally formidable Saracens but the maids were keen to play rugby and two tries from Dean Rogers, two from Gareth (no known surname) and one a piece from Lee Rawlings and Ed Davidson made the final score 30 - 0.

The second match saw the Maids beat the team from Thatcham 20 - 0

The third match was against London Irish and was a very close affair with the final score being a 0 -0 draw.

The fourth match of the group was against the host team from Marlow and saw a plethora of tries from the Maids, not a very nice thing to do to the hosts!! Gareth scored three tries, Dean Rogers , Ed Davison and Lee Rawlings each scored.

With those results the Maids were through to the final and played Thatcham but were unfortunately beaten 10 -5, excellent rugby on the day.
