U11s excellent start to season at Thatcham
Sunday 1st October 2000
The U11-Lions had an excellent start to the season with an outright win in all their matches against Thatcham. They demonstrated an excellent grasp of the new skills required at this level. They dominated play from the start with Oliver Woodward taking advantage of an early opportunity to score. Enthusiasm gripped the team as they passed well down the line, Jonathan Lowther drove forward passed out to Alexander Hanks who threw himself onto the line to score a second try. Alec Roberts took the conversions each time skilfully notching up the score. After half time play moved back and forth, those in the scrum made up of Ryan Sherwin, Luke Fletcher, Christian Shepherd, Toby Harrison and Jason Merritt worked well together successful every time. Thatcham came back undeterred and managed to move the ball down to their try line but the Maids defended well and moved the ball back to the half way line. Paul Roberts took the ball and passed to George Colbourn and onto Mark Lucas when the ball went into a ruck, Jonathan Lowther ripped it out and ran unchallenged to the line bringing the final score to 17 - 0. The U11-Tigers fielded a second team who had equal success with William Brennan taking an early lead catching the ball from kick off. He moved forward unchallenged he passed it onto Robin Scanlon who drove forward and returned it out on the wing to Brennan who ran from the half way line to score. Jamie Ford expertly took the conversion centering the ball well. The Tigers displayed themselves as having a second very strong scrum made up this time from Sam Aldridge, Jason Merritt, Alex McEown, Nick Hillier and Sam Clarke. The boys passed the ball freely up and down the line to advance the ball and Mark Lucas broke through the Thatcham defence to score. Again the Maids took the opportunity of a clear pitch and William Brennan ran towards the line ably supported by Christopher Bradbury and in true sporting style William passed the ball to Christopher for him to score. Thatcham fought hard to win the game back with Jo Dutton moving the ball out at every opportunity. A well-deserved win with a final score of 18 - 0 to the Tigers. The third and final friendly Game was based upon a mixture of both U11-Lions and Tigers with some positional changes to assess future options within the two halves of the game. All three games illustrated some key skills that needed to be developed over the coming season, starting from the placed kick off, use of fast forwards and wingers trying to win and retain the ball. Larger (5) person scrums, (2,3 or 4) person line-outs. Learning to kick for conversions, drop outs, restarts and penalties. Above all improved positional awareness, tackling, rucking and mauling to win and retain ball control and develop attacking rugby, within the squad and team disciplines. |
