Tigers win the Day at the Tournament

U10Bs at the Maidenhead Tournament

Sunday 17th October 1999

The Maids entered two teams in the B Tournament on Sunday.

The Tigers met Winchester first and both teams set up strong defence lines from the start but with good distribution from Alex Hanks. The ball passed out to the wing and William Brennan on the wing saw a window of opportunity to make a dash to the try line to put them in an early lead. Despite strong attacking from William Sennett Winchester fought back to equalise. The Maids were fuelled with enthusiasm and Christopher Bradbury on the other wing made the first of many successful runs that day to score. Team spirit was evident and Jonathon Lowther hooked the ball out and passed out to William Brennan on the wing for him to bring the score at half time to 15-1. The second half saw play dominated in the Winchester half and although Winchester scored again the Maids kept up their defence to win.

In their second game they met Ruislip but the team displayed excellent attacking skills with some superb tackles from Ryan Sherwin and they managed to keep play in the Ruislip half and George Colborn hooked the ball out superbly and scored. Ruislip came back but Christopher Bradbury got the ball on the wing and sprinted to the try line unchallenged and repeated this twice more to score his first hat trick. Although Ruislip scored one try George Colborn brought the score to 25-5 at half time. In the second half Toby Courtney and Sam Alderson showed persistent determination to keep Ruislip from scoring and Jamie Ford brought the score to 30-5 at the finish when he picked up a loose ball and ran to the try line.

In the third game the Maidenhead Tigers met the Maidenhead Pumas notching up a final score of 25-0 to put the Tigers in a strong position to win the tournament. They went onto play Windsor in the final game an equally strong team who showed their strength with an early try. The Tigers fought back with an equaliser from George Colborn. The Tigers had to attack hard against Windsor’s strong defence but with some excellent passing by Jason Merritt and tackles from Alex Hanks Christopher Bradbury managed to skirt through the defence to score quickly followed by another from William Sennett giving a half time score of 15-5. In the second half Windsor attacked well dominating play in the Maids half of the pitch giving the Maids only one further opportunity to score making them overall winners of the Bs.

The Maidenhead Pumas played extremely well but were not as lucky. They played Windsor first who scored early but Daniel Thompson made a hard drive down the centre and after a period of sustained pressure near the Windsor line Windsor finally broke out to score again. Windsor attacked hard and the Maids responded and Joe Dutton fought hard for the last eighteen metres and was rewarded with a try. The Pumas went onto win the scrum and a pass out to Killiam O’Connor gave him the chance to run from the half way line to score a superb try in the corner. Despite the Pumas keeping up the pressure Windsor won 25-2.

In the game against Ruislip, despite good tackles by Andrew Garratt and passing by Daniel Rhodes, their efforts were not enough to keep the opposition from scoring. And play against Winchester in their final game was disappointing and did not reflect the hard work and spirit that the boys maintained throughout the day.
