U10s settle score against Chippenham

Sunday 24th October 2004

Maids were keen to settle an old score on this game as it was Chippenham that beat us in the Cleve Tournament Final earlier this year.

The game started well for Maids with the forwards (Marcus Bateson, Simon Graham and Christian Horn) breaking down the Chippenham defence with some determined mauling, giving scrum half Kieran Egan the chance to get the ball out to fly half George Dutton to break away and score an impressive diving try in the first two minutes. Since our Cleve defeat Maids have concentrated on developing some set pieces and these were used against Chippenham to devastating effect. By the time the half time whistle had blown Maids were three tries up to nil. Matt Balmer and George Dutton adding the two additional tries. Chippenham, facing a humiliating defeat came back in the second half with some impressive attacking play. Maids were successful in holding most of these attacks at bay and the forwards deserve special praise for winning virtually every scrum throughout the game. Eventually, nearing the end of the game Chippenham pulled back a consolation try. The game ending 15 - 5 in favour of Maids.

Maidenhead Under 10 B's

It's a testament to the strength in depth that this age group now has that allowed Maids to loan Chippenham a couple of players to allow them to make up a B team.

Maids were instantly on the score sheet with Fly Half Colin Kerrins making a searing run down the wing and getting on to the score sheet almost immediately.

The forwards again totally overpowered their Chippenham counterparts. Scrum half Jim Bunn was clinical in getting the ball out to allow good runs from wings Dylan Cadegon & Josh Rolls. The confidence of the team was now running high and Maids took advantage of their superior ability in the line out with Spencer Bechtel to get the ball to centres Harry Hoxley and Ruari Evans. By the time Chippenham knew what was happening they were three tries down at half time.

The second half saw Chippenham return to some of their previous form and some determined attacks kept the Maids defence on their own line for much of the second half. The defence held strong however one slight error allowed their scrum half one consolation try in the dying seconds of the game.
