Drifters more blown away than drift away

Sunday 21st March 2004

Sunday 21st March saw a Maids squad head over in response to an invitation from our friends at Drifters, whose coaches attended the same course as a number of your U10 coaches last summer.

We were met with a friendly welcome, a very well organised training session evenly split between fun fitness work and skills, and some surprise opposition in the form of a Phoenix side who found themselves without a fixture.

Our first game was against Drifters, who had some very big powerful runners up front, but - happily for us - were lacking our pace outside. Since this was a day when the whole squad decided to play as a team, the ball got moved and tries were scored!

The final tally of 8 tries to 1 came from Daniel Andrews-Jones, Thomas Eckles, Chris Dow, Will "Turnermator" Turner, LD Basson and a hat-trick from Leo Smith. Sadly his father vanished without buying a round for all spectators in celebration!

The next game was against a Phoenix side supplemented by a couple of Drifters. This time our defence was completely watertight and after a slow start we came out winners by (averaging out the straw poll of players and spectators) 5 tries to 0. Undisputed scorers were Duncan Jones, LD Basson, and Luke Thomas (cheekily nicking a pass intended for one of his team-mates! - can't fault the appetite!) with others coming from Will and Leo, we think. (Apologies if we've missed anyone!!)

We'll see Drifters again at the Marlow Tournament.........let's just hope the winning habit sticks!!
