U10s at the Cleve tournament

Sunday 14th April 2002

On  the  day  of the London Marathon, Maidenhead Under 10s' faced their own marathon  as  they  travelled to Bristol to face West Country opposition at the  annual  Cleve  Rugby  Tournament.

A  league  of six formidable teams provided  a  spectators dream of a fiercely contested open competition that upheld  the  highest  standards  of  the  game.  Maidenhead, with only nine players  started  the  day  with  a  close run victory over Llandaff before succumbing  to  a narrow defeat by Cleve, the eventual cup winners.

A very close  game  against  Hucclecote  followed,  which gave Maids victory after holding  onto  a  narrow  half-time 10-5 lead.  The final two games against Clifton  and Newport were both draws that showed the full potential of this young  side.   Open  running  play  by committed but tired players received favourable  comments from the many spectators.

Overall, a good venture for the  Under  10s  who  were placed third overall but were justly rewarded by receiving the coveted fair play trophy.

Tries by:  Pegg(2), Boyd(2), Cadden (1), Johnson (1), Alderson (1).
