U10s in final at Cobham tournament
Sunday 8th October 2000
| Maidenhead under
10s played in their first competitive tournament of
the new season at Cobham last Sunday. Expectations where
high as this team had played together last year at under
9s and had an enviable tournament record. Maidenhead where drawn in league B and had to play the confident host team Cobham in their first match. Cobham had beaten Maids in their last meeting on tour in Somerset in May therefore Maids where out to seek revenge. At the half time whistle it was a stalemate at nil tries apiece although Maids had camped out in the Cobham half for most of the game the Cobham defence would not give way. The second half was a different story with some great attacking play from James Crichton and Sean Delaney but Cobham found space and scored first to make it 5 nil with only 2 minutes to go. Maids fought back hard and Graeme Loveday through shear determination managed to even the score for Maids with seconds to go. Next up where Chobham who where caught in a surprise move from Maids at the start which saw William Western-Kaye score in less than 30 seconds. Although Chobham managed a token trie Maids cruised to a convincing victory with further tries from Andrew Mudge and Jamie Watt which put Maids top of the league and into the semi-finals against Esher as Cobham and Chobham drew their match. Esher although a strong looking side never troubled a Maids team who had now shrugged off any new season rustiness and where out to replicate their successes of last season. Elliot Moore helped Oliver Hedley to gain a winning trie for Maids which placed them firmly in the final against Rossyln Park who in mini-rugby circles came with a reputation to equal the All Blacks. Maids where outclassed in the final and found it difficult to retain possession against an extremely well drilled Rosslyn Park side. The entire Maidenhead squad fought valiantly with some exceptional play coming from Warren Bishop, Josh Jackson and Michael Jones. The Maidenhead scrum couldnt cope with Rosslyn Parks sheer weight and lost nine out of the ten scrums awarded. Although Maids held on for much of the first of the first half they conceded 2 tries close to the whistle and another 2 before full time to loose 20 0 but collected well deserved runners up medals to end a well contested day. This Sunday sees the squad back in action at their home tournament at Braywick where they hope to repeat last seasons success by retaining the winners trophy. |
