Strong U10s undeterred at Saracens
U10s at the Saracens Tournament
Sunday 7th November 1999
| The Maids showed showed they are a force
to be reckoned with on Sunday at the Saracens tournament where they
competed against tough opposition where tries were few and far between.
In the first game against Saracens the Maids were on the attack from the start with an early attempt to score by Jonathan Lowther, but Saracens countered with strong defence in which particularly good tackling was seen from George Colborn. Ross Pepper broke through after several persistent attempts to score a well deserved try. Play continued in Saracens half of the pitch but the Maids failed to score further. In the second half the Maids conceded a try in the first few minutes unable to respond to the Saracens enthusiasm to equalise. Christopher Bradbury on the wing saw a chance to move towards the try line but the Saracens defence was strong and both team fought hard to break through and the score finished a draw 5 -5. In the second game they met friendly rivals Amersham and Chiltern, after a slow start Amersham and Chiltern came on the attack and play was dominated in the Maidenhead half. The Maids had to defend fiercely to stop their opponents from breaking through and Toby Harrison and Ryan Sherwin tackled like demons. With 0 -0 at half time the second half saw two very determined sides intent on taking the lead and play dominated around the centre but neither side succeeded and the result was a draw. Keen to have a win the Maids began on the attack against Ruislip and Alec Roberts on the wing scored an early try set up by Alex Hanks which boosted their adrenaline. From a penalty position the Maids drove forward and with great determination moved the ball back down into their half. Excited play ensued with control moving back and forth each defending and attacking with some well thought out passing by Sam Aldridge and Jamie Ford with fury but Ruislip failed to score and the Maids finished 5 - 0 up. In the fourth game they played and all who travelled from Yorkshire for the event, a team who had already demonstrated they were a strong side. Rising to the challenge some fantastic play seen when Christopher Bradbury hooked the ball out and ran towards the line, on being tackled the boys what excellent passing could be achieved without rescinding control to the opponents. The final score 10 - 0 to Sandall was well deserved did not reflect the truly excellent performance by the Maids. In the final game against Caldicot from Wales the Maids were playing for second place but despite persistent tackling from all the boys and many attempts to run through to the line by Paul Roberts, neither team weaken their defence and the final score at the end was 0 - 0. Although the outcome was disappointing the Maids showed that they are a strong side undeterred by tough challenges. |
