Abbey shield proves tough to break through for U10s

Sunday 4th April 2004

Having been told the Abbey Shield was a half day tournament for one team per age group it was something of a surprise for players and coaches to discover it was in fact a full-blown A and B tournament instead. Taking a calculated risk to give our squad a tough test after their romp to the silverware at Marlow, we entered the A squad competition and the boys showed real character and teamwork in a series of tough battles against Abbey, Windsor, Redingensians and Bracknell.

The whole squad deserves congratulations as we rotated players through a series of positions and a number of boys played their best rugby of the season. Representing Maidenhead were: Hal Orchard (can you find this sort of form earlier in the season for the Under 11s Hal?); Edward “Tackle Machine” Kaye; Josh “One man front row” Edney; Dominik “you can’t score 7 tries every week” Bart; Sam Scott, Jonathan Perry and Rupert Owen performing in “three scrum halves into one doesn’t go”; Piers “Man mountain” Baron; Shiv “I’m off on holiday again but I’ll score a try before I go” Khindria; Matthew “this running forward thing really works” Smith; Steven “speed machine” Carn; George “I’ll play any position just let me play” Thomas; and a special guest appearance from Charlie “gatecrasher” MacMichael.

Tries from Shiv and Josh Edney, very pleasingly against Windsor, who we completely outplayed in the 2nd half. A couple more minutes and we’d have had the game!

Well done everybody!.
