| Maidenhead
and Berkshire U16 player Alex Cannon was selected to play
in the English School's Presidents' XV against
Gloucestershire U16s last Tuesday. The match was to celebrate the centenary of the England Rugby Football Schools Union and was held at the Prince of Wales Stadium Cheltenham, in the presence of the Princess Royal. The status of the occasion was underlined by fact that the match officials were Chris White, Tony Spreadbury and Ed Morrison. Chris and Tony refereed with distinction in the recent World cup and Ed was in charge of the 1995 World Cup final. |

| The
match itself was an entertaining affair with the England
team looking like they were going to dominate with three
tries in the first half. A great display seeing that they
had only practised as a team earlier in the day. However
Gloucestershire made a game of it with two converted
tries early in the second half which made for an exciting
finish. The game was sealed for England by a try by another Berkshire player Ed Lewis-Pratt, making the final score 14-26. |

played in the whole game and made a significant
contribution to the England win. Sports Journalist of the
Year, Stephen Jones commented "I thought Alex was
superb - tactically very mature. He did Maidenhead
proud". Alex was supported by the attendance of a contingent of Maidenhead parents, coaches and players. After the game the teams were formally introduced to the Princess Royal. |
