The
Summerleaze Maidenhead RFC Colts' Sevens Tournament
Sunday
3rd October 2006
The
fifth Summerleaze Maidenhead Colts Sevens took place on Sunday
in unexpectedly good weather, which added to a day of exciting
rugby.
Despite
teams coming from far & wide, the final was an all Berkshire
affair between hosts Maidenhead and late entrants Newbury.
In was a close game throughout but Maids had expended too
much energy in the semi-final and Newbury ran out winners
22-12.
In
the group stages last season's National Colts Champions Bishops
Stortford looked like the early favourites with a 38-5 defeat
of Maidenhead. They remained undefeated in the group with
Maids coming second with wins over Widden Old Boys (15-10)
and London Irish (42-14).
The
other group was a really tight affair with 3 teams, Amersham
& Chiltern, Newbury and Bracknell equal on points. On
tries scored Amersham and Newbury went through to the semi-finals
and Bracknell into the Plate semi-final with Rosslyn Park.
In
the semi-final Maids took on old rivals Amersham & Chiltern.
Whilst the score-line 30-0 looked comfortable the match was
as closely fought as ever, leaving Maids little in the tank
for the final.
In
the other semi-final Newbury overturned expectations with
a 26-19 defeat of Bishops Stortford, setting up the final
with Maids.
Gloucester
side Widden Old Boys won the Plate competition.
Marcus
Brown of Widden was named player of the tournament by the
referees and Alex Cannon was Maids' player of the day.
Special
mention must go to Mike Skelton and Pat McSweeney of Maidenhead
who stepped in at the last minute to help out London Irish,
Mike even scoring against Maids.
Maids
squad:
Chris Adam, Mitch Batten, Alex Cannon, Ryan Christian, James
Henley, Chris Holden, Luke Knowles, Jimmy Makurumure, Tom
Miller, Tom Morgan, Jack Robinson, Sam Stefan.
